Often new printing technologies and marketing solutions sound like coming straight from a Science-Fiction movie. Or were you able to imagine solar cells and living organs or bones coming out of a printer some years ago? So, the challenge for all innovative technologies always is to make clear that there will be a need for it in future making it worth researching on it now. SciFutures helps companies to face this challenge by using Science-Fiction storytelling and prototype building as a tool.

Telling Stories in an Unconventional Way

Some of the largest multi-billion dollar companies like Visa or Ford have already collaborated with SciFutures in the past. One essential element of SciFutures’ workflow contains the creation of a Science-Fiction comic which shows how people might use a new technology in the future embedded in a thrilling storyline. Science-Fiction succeeds by conveying the effects of future technologies on characters readers can relate to. To obtain the best result regarding this, the small consulting and prototyping start-up works with a network of more than 100 Science-Fiction writers.

Hershey Company, for example, has built a system to 3D-print chocolate but they were unsure if chocolate customers would recognize the printer’s usefulness for their daily lives. SciFutures helped Hershey showing their clients its benefits by creating a graphic novel that illustrates how people might use this printer in the future.

Marketing with Stories You Can Touch

In case the new technology only exists in theory SciFutures’ working progress revolves around building a prototype of the innovation. For Lowe’s Companies Inc SciFutures built the HoloRoom. It is a 20-by-20-foot space where customers can envision how Lowe’s products like furniture or flooring would look in their own homes via an Augmented Reality headset. With a tablet, they can pick up various products. By the way: HoloRoom is inspired by Science-Fiction as well: It imitates the Holodeck, a fictitious room from the TV series “Star Trek” that creates real-looking environments suitable for experiments.

Bringing products and technologies to life with Science-Fiction is an easy way to attract the attention of potential clients and show them the technology’s relevance in their daily life.
